Should Your Business Consider Utilizing Directory as a Service?

By Mike Shollack,
CEO & President

The sheer volume of advancements that has emerged with cloud computing technology in recent years is dizzying. As a result, the IT landscape continues to evolve, and businesses are doing their best to leverage new tools to help chart a course for the future.

One of the newest cloud trends for businesses is utilizing Directory as a Service (DaaS).

As more and more businesses migrate their infrastructure into cloud platforms, the popularity of DaaS will continue to rise. You may want to consider moving your directory services into the cloud to enjoy many of the same benefits as other businesses. If you need help or are wondering where to start, you also can reach out to an experienced IT and cloud consulting company like Verdant TCS to learn more.

SO WHAT EXACTLY DOES DIRECTORY AS A SERVICE MEAN?

Even though they both frequently use the DaaS acronym, Directory as a Service is different than Desktop as a Service, which provides virtual desktops through various cloud service providers like Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Google Cloud Platform.

Directory as a Service – which we’ll shorten to DaaS for the rest of this blog — is a secure, cloud-based Software as a Service (SaaS) solution that gives businesses a centralized location for all employees to access their systems, resources, and applications. In other words, DaaS can be the access management hub your employees use to get the tools they need to conduct business.

Most DaaS solutions use a number of common protocols to maintain access and communication — including Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML), and Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS). These protocols help DaaS solutions provide IT services with an effective and secure connection to authorize, authenticate, and manage your devices and networks.

With SaaS models being implemented on a widespread basis, more directories are being added in public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud environments. And for good reason.

THESE BENEFITS CAN HELP DAAS PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE IN YOUR BUSINESS

DaaS can be a core component of your long-term IT strategy by offering many of the same benefits as other cloud-based solutions. Here are some of the reasons you may want to consider upgrading your cloud infrastructure:

  • Improve flexibility: From computers to mobile devices, you can give team members advanced collaboration tools that allow them to complete their work more easily, both in and out of the office.
  • Manage critical data: You can seamlessly update settings, implement upgrades, and back up information in real time to ensure access is consistent and reliable across the organization.
  • Boost efficiency: A centralized database will help your IT admins manage resources quickly and flexibly to reduce friction and frustration throughout your business.
  • Save money: Rather than devoting IT resources to the maintenance of physical hardware, legacy operating systems, and on-premises infrastructure, you can focus investments on more strategic initiatives.
  • Improve security: You’ll be able to significantly boost security by establishing stronger protocols related to access, device, and password management, such as multi-factor authentication and the “zero trust” model.

The last bullet may be the most appealing to businesses since new cybersecurity threats seem to pop up every day.

SECURELINK BOOSTS SECURITY WITH MULTIFACTOR AUTHENTICATION AND DIRECTORY-AS-A-SERVICE

Small businesses are popular targets for cybersecurity attacks, but there are preventive steps you can take. One way to stop yourself from falling victim to hacks, viruses, or data breaches is by using SecureLink — our secure, reliable, and flexible cloud directory solution.

You can securely manage your non-domain resources without uprooting your current infrastructure by seamlessly integrating SecureLink’s DaaS with multi-factor authentication. This way, even if a physical laptop is stolen, your threat level will be greatly reduced.

No directory? No problem. SecureLink can still be your authoritative identity provider for Mac/Windows/Linux, Wi-Fi, web/on-premises applications, infrastructure, and file servers.
